Hong Kong Outlines Mooring Capacity and Expansion Plans for Guangdong Southbound Yacht Travel

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Ms Mable Chan detailed Hong Kong's current yacht mooring capacities and long-term infrastructure expansion following the maiden voyage of southbound yachts from Guangdong.

What Changed

  • Hong Kong established five designated mooring anchorage areas providing 150 berths for Mainland yachts travelling southbound from Guangdong.
  • The Marine Department employs a real-time dynamic monitoring system to facilitate direct communication with Mainland yacht captains.
  • The HKSAR Government and Airport Authority Hong Kong are planning four new yacht parking facilities, with tenders for the Airport island Yacht Bay expected next year.

The Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Ms Mable Chan, delivered remarks at a media session on October 16, 2026, following the maiden voyage ceremony for the southbound travel of yachts from Guangdong to Hong Kong. The initiative marks an expansion in cross-border maritime travel, enabling yachts originating from Mainland China to visit designated locations within Hong Kong waters.

Addressing concerns regarding mooring capacity and potential space constraints during peak seasons, Ms Chan stated that existing facilities are considered adequate to meet potential demand. Mainland yachts are permitted to dock or moor at five designated mooring anchorage areas offering a total of 150 berths, in addition to established private mooring facilities at local yacht clubs. To facilitate smooth navigation and maritime oversight, the Marine Department operates a real-time dynamic monitoring system to maintain direct communication with Mainland yacht captains navigating Hong Kong waters.

To accommodate prospective growth in cross-border maritime travel, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Airport Authority Hong Kong are planning four major new yacht parking facilities across key Hong Kong locations: the Airport island, Aberdeen, Lamma Island, and the Hung Hom waterfront. Project implementation is moving forward, with the Airport Authority Hong Kong currently inviting expressions of interest for the Yacht Bay on the Airport island and planning to invite formal tenders next year.
