Hong Kong National Security Police Arrest Two for Alleged Seditious Social Media Posts

On October 6, 2026, the National Security Department of the Hong Kong Police Force arrested a 38-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman in Kowloon for suspected seditious acts published online.

According to a press release issued by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government on October 8, 2026, the two individuals were arrested on suspicion of contravening Section 24 of the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. Specifically, the police alleged that they engaged in the offence of "doing with a seditious intention an act that had a seditious intention" (also referred to as "doing with a seditious intention an act or acts that had a seditious intention").

The official announcement detailed that the arrested individuals, including a male licensed insurance broker, were suspected of operating pages across various social media platforms. Through these accounts, they allegedly published seditious posts aimed at inciting hatred against the constitutional order of the HKSAR. Additionally, the police stated that the arrested man profited by selling insurance products in connection with his activities.

Prior to executing the arrests, law enforcement officers obtained court search warrants to search the residences of both individuals, where they seized relevant exhibits. Following the initial operation and questioning, both arrested persons were released on bail pending further investigation.

The HKSAR Police emphasized that the alleged acts constitute a serious criminal offence. Under Section 24 of the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, individuals convicted of this offence face a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment upon first conviction. The police reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing the law strictly to prevent, suppress, and punish acts or activities that endanger national security in accordance with the law.
