WTO MSME Group Examines IP Management, ESG Support Tools, and Upcoming Global SME Initiatives

The WTO MSME Group held an information session on intellectual property tools, ESG trade support, standards development, and upcoming global ministerial events.

What Changed

  • WIPO and CIPA UK presented intellectual property tools and case studies, including Colombian refrigeration technology, Ghanaian Kente cloth GI protection, and Tokaj wine sector IP usage.
  • The EIF reported USD 1.1 billion in exports generated across Phase Three, while the ITC introduced an ESG module and announced Switzerland will host the May 2027 Global SME Ministerial Meeting.
  • UN Trade and Development, ISO cooperation reps, Japan, and Uruguay shared updates on international standards, Strait of Hormuz disruption analysis, and economic growth initiatives.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Informal Working Group on Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) convened to review intellectual property (IP) tools, global sustainability initiatives, and upcoming international ministerial events. Chaired by Ambassador Matthew Wilson of Barbados, the meeting brought together international organizations and national representatives to discuss strategies for enhancing MSME trade competitiveness.

During the thematic discussion on IP, the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys UK (CIPA UK) emphasized that while IP is critical for commercializing ideas, awareness among small firms remains low. Isabel Pulido, founder of Colombian firm Nanofreeze, demonstrated how patenting passive refrigeration technology unlocked investment and client growth. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) presented its Global Entrepreneurship Empowerment Programme (GEEP), offering mentorship and consolidated services. Case studies were also delivered by Ghana regarding Geographical Indication protection for Kente cloth and by Peter Molnar of the Tokaj Council of Wine Communities on the wine sector. Additionally, Marie Sharp's Fine Foods of Belize was highlighted in the meeting's MSME Spotlight for leveraging branding and quality to build international markets.

Aissatou Diallo, Executive Director of the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), reported on EIF Phase Three (launched at MC14 and running through 2031), which has supported approximately 35,000 MSMEs and generated an estimated USD 1.1 billion in exports. The International Trade Centre (ITC) introduced a new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) module for the Global Trade Helpdesk, with Anna Jakowska-Ericksson noting it will simplify sustainability transformation for MSMEs. The ITC also announced that Switzerland will host the second Global SME Ministerial Meeting in Geneva from 25 to 27 May 2027.

Further updates included work on ISO/IWA 51 presented by Jack Yao of the Organization for Trade Development and Standards Cooperation, aimed at strengthening practical cooperation between business support organizations and standards bodies. UN Trade and Development highlighted the World Investment Forum in Doha (25 to 27 October 2026) and its report on the impact of Strait of Hormuz disruptions on MSMEs. Japan invited member contributions for its proposal on "Trade as an Engine for Economic Growth," while Uruguay shared reference points on MSMEs, digitalization, and finance from its recent Trade Policy Review.
