Legal Update European Union Regulatory guidance

ESMA Confirms 3 September 2026 Go-Live Date for Weekly Commodity Derivatives Position Reporting

ESMA announced that the weekly commodity derivatives position reporting framework under XML schema v2.0 will officially go live on 3 September 2026.

What Changed

  • ESMA set 3 September 2026 as the go-live date for weekly commodity derivatives position reporting.
  • Market participants must comply with new reporting specifications and validation rules under XML schema v2.0.
  • ESMA published updated reporting instructions and XML schema documentation to assist implementation activities.

Market participants in European commodity derivatives markets face defined technical and reporting requirements following an official announcement from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). As the European Union’s financial markets regulator and supervisor, ESMA has confirmed that its updated weekly commodity derivatives position reporting framework will officially go live on 3 September 2026.

Beginning on 3 September 2026, market participants will be required to submit weekly position reports in accordance with the updated reporting requirements, technical specifications, and validation rules introduced by XML schema version v2.0. These updated reporting parameters establish the operational standard for submitting required position data to regulatory bodies.

The confirmation of the go-live date follows ESMA’s original announcement and a subsequent decision to postpone the initial rollout. Following that postponement, additional time was dedicated to technical and operational preparations to support a smooth transition for reporting entities and regulatory infrastructure to the new reporting arrangements.

To support market participants in completing their technical implementation activities, ESMA has published updated technical documentation. This documentation includes comprehensive reporting instructions alongside the XML schema v2.0, providing the specifications required to adapt internal systems, data structures, and automated submission processes.

This framework affects entities trading or holding positions in commodity derivatives within the European Union regulatory scope. Market participants are advised to utilize the available documentation to ensure technical readiness ahead of the go-live date. Press and communications inquiries regarding this release are directed to ESMA’s Senior Communications Officer.
