David Diop once said that at the end of the rainbow, the place of origin of mankind is the glorious Africa of the ancient grasslands.
Africa is not a country. Because in this land where 1.3 billion people live, indigenous and foreign laws are constantly evolving in conflict and integration and developing in harmony and coexistence. Africa is one of the world’s fastest-growing emerging markets, representing great opportunities as well as risks and challenges. More than 10,000 Chinese companies are operating in Africa, and China is Africa’s largest trading partner.
Africa is full of promise, but lawmakers know little about African law.
In the early 1990s, due to the changes and uncertain market conditions in Africa, Kaplan & Stratton and Werksmans, the top law firm in South Africa, founded LEX Africa, which has since grown into a legal network of over 25 African countries, with only one firm per member country.
On July 31, 2020, the Swiss-Chinese Law Association and LEX Africa signed a framework agreement on bilateral cooperation, with a special emphasis on the future of multi-lawyer training and the promotion of broader cooperation among the younger generation of lawyers.
